When you’re in college you may be tempted to take shortcuts when it comes to food. Many universities make it a point to serve healthy meals, but most students are likely to eat in their dorms or off-campus housing instead. With that, there is a real possibility that they may not be eating well enough for them to have a healthy mind and body for school. That is why I’ve compiled a list of healthy eating tips for college students.
- Meal Prep
Rather than stock your dorm pantry with snacks and instant noodles, you might be better off preparing your meals and storing them in the freezer. You can use your dorm’s kitchen if possible and microwave your food whenever you need to eat. The most important thing to keep in mind is to prepare healthy meals for the whole week.
- Practice Self-Awareness When Choosing Food
The unhealthiest types of food are the ones that are marketed the most. Even if they claim to follow health standards, like putting calories on a label, you may still be tempted to choose the more savory meal instead of a healthy one. Whenever you want to buy food, try to look for items that are healthy. You can buy fruits, whole grain bread, yogurt, and other food items that are easily available in shops and groceries around the school.
- Choose Carb When You Need Physical Energy
Of course, you should choose complex carbohydrates. These are the types of carbs that can be converted into energy, rather than simple sugar. Examples include whole grain products, oatmeal, granola bars, muesli, etc. Simple carbohydrates like white bread is usually processed by the body into simple sugar as well, giving you a sugar crash and less energy for school.
- Protein for Breakfast and After a Long Day
Even if you’re exerting the mind, you are also moving all day from class to class. Even sitting down burns up energy. That is why you need to eat protein before your day starts. It should be combined with complex carbs to ensure that you have all the energy you need for the day. As for after, you’ll need to replenish and repair the muscles you used. It is best to eat meat for supper, but not too late, like before going to bed. If you don’t eat meat, you can eat something high in protein like beans and tofu.
- Healthy Snacks
Aside from main courses, you should also do well to choose healthy types of snacks during the day. The best type of snacks that are both healthy and beneficial for your mind are nuts. If you are allergic, you can eat vegetable chips instead. Make sure that you are choosing food with natural ingredients so that you don’t ingest too much sodium. Avoid sweets as well as this will only make you more tired an hour or so after eating.
- Drink Plenty of Water
It’s a lot to ask for a student running around school where bathrooms are populated with other students, but drinking water as much as you can helps replenish your energy and hydrate you as the day goes on. This is especially important during summer and winter when your body needs liquids the most. Another thing to note is that dehydration can cause headaches and fatigue – two things that won’t help you when you’re planning on studying.
- Don’t Watch Your Weight. Watch What You Eat
Many student feel the need to stay thin while in college, but the reason why many students end up gaining weight is because they are not eating well. It may be due to stress, inaccessible food sources, or other reasons, but it is important to try your best to healthy food. This is especially important when you are studying for classes and exams. Your weight does not define you, but your health does need to be taken care of.
